Activated Charcoal Products | How best to use them for MY skin type?

Earlier this month we posted about a Spotlight ingredient - Activated Charcoal, now we dig a bit more into how we suggest you put this ingredient to work for you and your skin care routine!

Our Activated Charcoal Products

We offer several activated charcoal products to help you achieve your best skin yet:

  • Charcoal Face Wash Bar: This deep cleanser removes dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
  • Clay & Charcoal Mask: This deep-cleansing mask draws out toxins and impurities, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and revitalized.

How best to use the Activated Charcoal products for MY skin type?

It depends on your skin type, the time of year and what results you are looking for!

  • Dry Skin - Use the Charcoal Face Wash occasionally (from weekly to several times a month) to deep clean and prevent blackheads and breakouts.
  • Dry Skin with trouble spots - Try using the Clay & Charcoal Mask as a spot treatment in combination with a gentle cleanser.
    • Mask: Add a tsp of the dry mask to a small container with a lid. Add a small splash of water to create a paste, using a non-metal spoon to mix. Apply to trouble spots using clean fingers or a cotton-swab. Allow to fully dry, about 20 minutes or longer for stubborn areas. Wash with a gentle cleanser (our Oatmeal Face Wash Bar is a nice gentle cleanser for dry skin) and light moisturizer (like our Moisturizing Face Serum).
    • Combination Skin - Use the Charcoal Face Wash every couple days, alternating with a gentle cleanser to deep clean and prevent blackheads and breakouts without drying skin out too much. (Our Oatmeal Face Wash Bar is a nice gentle cleanser to alternate washing with)
    • Oily skin - Use the Charcoal Face Wash frequently or even daily to deep clean and prevent blackheads and breakouts.
    • Oily skin with trouble spots - Use the Charcoal Face Wash daily to deep clean, and the Clay & Charcoal Mask for either spot treatment or an every other week full face mask treatment.
      • Mask: Shake or scoop a quarter size amount into a small dish. Add water and stir to create a paste. Gently massage paste on to face avoiding eyes. Leave on skin for 5 - 10 minutes or until the mask is dry. Rinse with warm water and follow up with a moisturizer.
      • Use a small soft bristle paint brush (a child's watercolor paint brush is perfect) to gently apply the mask.

What else can I use the Clay and Charcoal Mask for?

Did you know the Clay & Charcoal Mask can be used for way more than just a face mask? Here are some of the other uses we have for the product!

    • Bug bite, sting or irritation from a plant: Carefully wash the area with soap and water if available, pat dry with a towel. Make a thick paste with the mix and a little water. Apply a thick layer over the affected area, including any areas with swelling. Allow the paste to dry, it will naturally begin to flake off, reapply as needed. Rinse and wash the area daily, reapplying the paste until swelling completely subsides and skin has returned to normal.
      • Store any excess in a sealed container in the refrigerator, use within 2 or 3 days.
    • Armpit detox: When transitioning to a natural deodorant, you’ll often find that they work more efficiently after you’ve done a pit detox. This resets the skin and prepares it for a natural toxin free deodorant. Create a paste using the mix and some water, apply a thin layer to the underarm. Allow to dry for 5- 20 minutes, keeping arms out or up to reduce chafing. Thoroughly wash off in the shower with soap and water or using soap and water and a wet washcloth.
      • You can boost the detox here by using a 50/50 mix of water and apple cider vinegar.
